Currently, 23% of American adults over the age of 65 are completely edentulous1, and 37.9 million adults in the United States will have no natural teeth by 2020. Although the number of edentulous adults is expected to decrease by 10%, this is overshadowed by the 79% increase in the adult population over the age of 552. Implant supported dentures significantly improve the quality of life in comparison to removable dentures3, but many of these individuals have significant bone loss, which may be unsuitable for implant placement.

The PC-33 is not terribly impressive, but a PC-151 (see right) had 7 pins and the schematic is quite impressive. Apart from terminal olefins, which react easily (10 bar H2, 60°C), internal ones also can be hydrogenated. For example, trisubstituted double bonds (2f and 2g) were reduced at 150°C and 40 bar H2 in 97 and 92% yield, respectively. Obviously, this opens the possibility of selective hydrogenation of an easily accessible double bond in the presence of a less reactive one (47), as was shown for the formation of 2w. At 60°C, the terminal double bond was selectively hydrogenated, while the internal was not.

The author notes that you can use other methods such as rubber stamping or lithography to ink the printed circuit board. There was even talk of using decalcomania which is exactly what it sounds like, but I still had to look it up. There were many other methods that didn’t catch on over the long term. For example, “dusting” had metallic dust spread on a substrate and sintered in place much like some metal 3D printing processes. We were especially amused by the cylindrical boards that built circuits around a glass tube.
